Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) is set to destroy confiscated narcotics on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which falls on every June 26.Illicit drugs with a total weight of 6,322 kilograms  with the street value of over 13.697 billion baht, along with seized marijuana and kratom from the Klong Ton and Samranraj police stations, as well as from the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) weighing more than 8,400 kilograms  will be eradicated this time around. 

 
 
 

On June 25, 2018, Mr. Thawat Suntrajarn, Vice Minister of Public Health has presided over the 48th Destruction of Confiscated Narcotics in celebration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which is designated by the UNGA to be June 26 of every year, at the Utility and Environment Management Centre, Bang Pa-in Industrial Estate in Phra Nakhon Sri Ayutthaya province. The event is scheduled to be attended by Teres Krassannairawiwong, M.D., Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Public Health, foreign dignitaries, executives from government agencies, as well as relevant offices from both the public and private sectors, including the Royal Thai Police, NSB, the Royal Thai Army (RTA), personnel from the Bang Pa-in Industrial Estate, and the media, all of whom had witnessed the destruction process.

 

   The narcotics set to be destroyed comprised of confiscated illicit drugs from the holdings of the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which weigh 6,322 kilograms , seized from 7,245 cases, worth well over 13.697 billion baht. Out of the total weight, 5,514 kilograms  (or about 61 million pills) were Methamphetamine, which has the street value of about 12.254 billion baht, 486 kilograms  of ice/ crystal methamphetamine (Ice Meth), valued at 1.216 billion baht, more than 108 kilograms  of heroine, with the value of 174 million baht, 10 kilograms  of MDMA/ MDA, with the street value of  34 million baht, over 5 kilograms  of cocaine, valued at 16 million baht, more than 122 kilograms  of opium worth about 1.3 million baht, along with marijuana and kratom confiscated by the Klong Ton and Samranraj police stations, as well as NSB which has a combined weight of 8,400 kilograms . All of the confiscated drugs will be destroyed using the Pyrolytic Incineration method at the temperature of 850 degrees Celsius and higher to ensure that the incineration will not pollute the surrounding environment.

 

   The statistics of narcotics destructions between 1977-2018 in Thailand stands at over 128,776 kilograms , valuing at more than 197.343 billion baht. Amphetamine and methamphetamine were destroyed at the highest amount in the past year at 74,708 kilograms , followed by opium and other narcotics at 28,760 kilograms , 25,127 kilograms  of heroine, and ectasy weighing over 179 kilograms .

 

 
 

 Mr. Thawat Suntrajarn, Vice Minister of Public Health said the ministry, together with relevant agencies have integrated the rehabilitation system in order to ensure that drug addicts and users receive a comprehensive treatment in line with the government’s policy on drug addicts prevention and mitigation. All agencies will closely work together to follow up on and provide care to patients after they finished their rehabilitations. For the 2018 fiscal year, more than 208,350 drug addicts have been targeted for rehabilitation, comprising of 123,850 persons whom volunteered for the rehabs, 61,500 were forced rehabs, while 23,000 others were convicted addicts. Between 1 October 2017 to 28 February 2018, a total of 68,878 have gone through drug rehabilitation, accounting for 56.19 percent. Additionally, 38,707 volunteers, 26,009 forced rehabs and 4,162 convicted addicts were also rehabilitated. Over 800 hospitals nationwide are equipped with internationally standardised rehabilitation system. The public could also reach the rehabilitation hotline at 1655.
